ChinStrap Penguin

The Chinstrap Penguin belongs to the family Spheniscidae. These penguins can be found on the shores of various islands in the Pacific and Antarctic Ocean.

The Chinstrap penguin gets its name from the black band under its head. It looks as if the penguin is wearing a helmet. The main colors of this species of penguin are black and white. Very similar to other species, but it is the black band that helps distinguish.

Chinstrap penguins are fairly small. They reach heights up to 30 in. and weigh up to 12 lbs. Another noticeable feature on them are their legs. Not only are they super strong but they are pink. These pink stumpy webbed feet give the penguin a very distinctive waddle.

During breeding time, the Chinstrap will be seen on shore with these circular nests made from stones. They will lay 2 eggs and the male and female will take turns caring for their young until they join the other chicks in a group called a crèche. Once they completely molt and have their adult feathers, they will go to sea!
