Damselfish

Damselfish belong to the family Pomacentridae. This marine fish can be found in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific oceans on coral reefs and in rocky areas. There are about 250 species of damselfish in this family with the majority of them being marine (some can be in freshwater or brackish waters). Damselfish are relatively small fish. Most damsels only get up to about 6 in., but the Garibaldi can get up to 12 in. This creature is known for coming in bright colors like red, orange, yellow, or blue. During most of the daytime hours, you will find this fish foraging for food. Damselfish will eat small crustaceans and plant matter that are suspended into the water currents. When the currents are low, the damsels will forge in a higher water column where plankton is plenty. When the current picks up, the damsels will forge closer to the bottom of the water column. It's a lot easier to eat during fast currents so most damsels will forge heavily then. As small as this fish may be, they are extremely territorial. What’s cool about this animal is how they court. Like the seahorse, the damselfish has a special courtship when finding a mate. For the female damselfish it is not about how big the male is but how they exhibit their vigorous parental quality during their signal jump (that is the name of the behavior). They will rise in the water column and swim backwards rapidly. The females will rate the males on the pulsed sound they make when descending the column.
