Peacock Mantis Shrimp

The Peacock Mantis Shrimp belongs to the family Odontodactylidae. These creatures are native to the Indo-Pacific Oceans. This species of mantis shrimp can be found living on reefs where the sandy flats are, calling a U-shaped burrow home. They are complete neat freaks and will spend a lot of time ensuring their home is debris free. The Peacock's name comes from the beautiful colors that canvas their body (just like the beautiful feathers we see on peacocks!). With red as the base, the bright greens and blues pop on top of the red. Both sexes are similar in appearance, the female's red color is just more potent and covers their body more. Their eyes are very complex. They can see wavelengths of color more than mammals can! As beautiful as this creature is, they are a violent kind of predator. This carnivore preys on shelled invertebrates (sometimes some fish!) and will use their sharp claws and powerful punch to kill and break open their prey! The Peacock Mantis Shrimp is known to have one of the fastest movements an animal can have. Their punch is so powerful it can punch through the glass of an aquarium! They may be pretty, but most fishers will avoid them due to the painful punch they possess.
