Pink Sea Fan

Sea Fans, or Gorgonian, are in the family Gorgoniidae. Sea Fans can be found on the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean and the western Mediterranean Sea.

This colonial species is considered a “soft coral”. Each Sea fan is a group of polyps that share a hard skeleton. Sea fans can grow as tall as 25 cm but can get to be about 1 m across.

You’ll find these animals attached to rocky surfaces, branching out into a fan shape. Protruding from the small anemone-like polyps are wart-like growths.

Although they are known as the “pink” sea fan, they have a range of colors from white to orange and deep pink.

When its feeding time, Sea fans will ensure that its angled facing the water column. The ploys will expand their tentacles to catch their food within the water that passed through them.

Sea fans are home to many sea creatures looking for shelter and free food.

Sea Fans only grown 1cm PER YEAR! So slow! Scientist believe the oldest sea fan may be over 50 years old!

Unfortunately, the pink sea fan is classified as Vulnerable on the global IUCN Red List. Please be careful when swimming around coral reefs. We do not want to kick or hit one of these creatures.
