Small Spotted-Catshark

The Small-Spotted Catshark belongs to the family Scyliorhinidae. This creature is in fact a shark. This shallow-water shark can be found in the northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. The appearance of this shark is very slender with a blunt head. Spotted catshark has rough sandpaper to the touch skin, that is greyish brown with dark brown spots. This species of dogfish gets up to about 3ft. and can weigh a little over 4 lbs. Their two dorsal fins sit back towards the tail. This allows them to use their defense mechanism of curling up into a donut shape to protect themselves from predators. What’s cool about this species is how the female catsharks lay their eggs. Since they are an oviparous (lay eggs) species, the catshark will only produce one young pup at a time. Females will lay their eggs in pairs in what are called ‘egg cases’, made up of keratin. The egg cases have long curly tendrils at the end. The mother will take their tendril and attach it to seaweed to grow. They will spend a lot of time ensuring that their young are safely secure.
