Sperm Whales

The Sperm Whale belongs in the family Physeteridae. They can be found in ice-free oceans, deep in offshore waters. If seen closer to shore, they will be in areas where the continental shelf is small and will drop quickly to depths as deep as 3,020 ft. Therefore, they are what we call pelagic mammals. This means they dwell mostly in the pelagic zone of the ocean. Sperm whales are the largest toothed whale and is the largest toothed predator! These creatures are specific with their breeding. These whales will seasonally migrate just for feeding and breeding purposes. Female sperm whales will only give birth once every 4 to 20 years because they care for their young for at least a decade with the cooperation of other sperm whale females. They are very protective of their young! Once a male becomes of mature age, he will leave and live a solidary life outside of mating season. These whales don’t have predators if they are mature. If the adult whale is weak or there is a calf, a pod of orcas will take advantage (of course)! What’s cool about this species is that it has the largest brain on Earth! It weighs 5 times more than the human brain.
