Spotted Sweetlips, also known as “harlequin sweetlips”, belongs to the family Haemulidae. They are native to the Indo-Pacific Ocean, inhabiting lagoons and reefs.
What’s interesting about this species is the drastic change in color from juvenile to adult. When the Spotted Sweetlips are juveniles, they are brown with white blotches all over. The adult will grow, and the color will reverse, and the brown background turns white, and the white spots become dark spots. The big “lips” they have grow as they get older.
The adults tend to live a more solitary life near ledges and caves while the juveniles are taking shelter in coral. While the juveniles are young, they swim with their head down, wildly moving their fins to mimic how a toxic flatworm looks and use that to scare predators away.
